Development of Cancer
Human body cells have fixed
life-spans and naturally die with their age, only to be replaced with new
cells. Cancer develops when
cellular changes cause an abnormal growth and uncontrolled division of cells,
due to lack components that instruct them to stop dividing.
Continuous and uncontrolled
growth of cells results in the formation of tumors that can be cancerous. The
cancerous i.e. malignant tumors impair the person’s immune system and cause
other changes that interfere with normal functioning of body.
Often cancerous cells from tumors
break away from their place of origin i.e. Primary cancer site and invade
adjacent cells through bloodstream or lymph system to form new tumors in other
organs of the body. This spread of cancerous cells to other organs of body is
termed as metastasis.
Cancer treatment options
Among all cancer
treatment options, Surgery remains an important component of every treatment
plan for malignant tumors to prevent disease spread.
In order to reduce
and / or prevent spread of cancer to other organs, it becomes prudent for oncosurgeons to
remove the affected lymph nodes.
Very
often, surgery alone may not be enough for treatment of malignant cancers. Invariably,
surgery is supplemented along with other cancer treatments, such as:
