Advance Cancer Treatment & Surgery Hospital India: What to Expect?

Cancer treatment and surgery options are recommended by your doctor after considering the type and stage of cancer, patient’s preference, possible side effects and overall health. Surgery has been used for treating cancer for many years. There are different types of cancer surgery that are used to treat this condition.

1)    Curative surgery:
It involves the removal of a cancerous tumor and works best on localized cancer cells that haven’t yet spread to the other parts of the body. This type of surgery if often followed by chemotherapy or radiation to ensure that all the cancerous cells have been removed. The curative surgery types are robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery.

2)    Preventive surgery:
It is used to keep the cancer from occurring. Most colon cancers can be prevented by removing the precancerous polyps before they become malignant. A woman who is at a high risk for breast cancer can decide to get her breasts removed rather than worry about getting breast cancer later in life.

3)    Reconstructive surgery:
It returns the body to the normal or near-normal functioning and appearance following the cancer treatment. The most common restorative surgery is the best reconstruction surgery done after a mastectomy. Other examples of this type of surgery are testicular implants and facial reconstruction.

4)    Diagnostic surgery (biopsy):
During this procedure, the surgeon will remove some or all of the tumor to determine if the growth is cancerous. A biopsy can be performed in several ways including:
i)                  Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA): During this procedure,  a fine needle is inserted into the tumor and the material is drawn for examination under the microscope.
ii)                Incisional or excisional biopsy: The patient is put under the local or the regional anesthesia that numbs the area. Then the surgeon makes a small incision in the skin to either remove a piece of a large tumor called as incisional biopsy or the entire mass called as an excisional biopsy for further inspection.

5)    Staging surgery:
This surgery is usually used for determining the extent of a cancer. Sometimes, this procedure can be performed without using an incision with the help of a small camera (scopes) attached to a flexible tube that are inserted into the natural openings of the body. An endoscope is used in the hollow body cavities and organs like the lungs, urinary tract and the intestinal tract. A laparoscope is used to provide a view of the abdominal cavity to the surgeon. A laparotomy includes small incision in the abdomen and this procedure is performed under general anesthesia. This procedure is used in case when the suspicious area cannot be examined by the less invasive procedures.

6)    Supportive surgery:
It is used to help with other cancer treatments. Some chemotherapy devices need a port to be inserted under the skin.

7)    Palliative surgery:
This surgery is used to ease the pain, disability or other complications that occur with advanced cancer. Often the palliative surgery can improve the quality of life, but this is not a cure for cancer or an anti-cancer treatment.
